New Delhi: In a big relief to commutes in Delhi and Gurugram, the Dwarka Expressway is expected to be completed by March 2024.

The 34 km-long expressway which aims to decongest the National Highway-8, links Shiv Murti Chowk in Delhi to Kherki Daula in Gurugram.

An official said the expressway will be open to the public soon and only a portion of the project will take longer as it was added to the plan at a later stage. Citing the reason behind the delay, the official said that the design of the delayed portion, a tunnel near the airport, had to be changed following a request from the Delhi airport authorities.

He told the the entire project has two tunnels, one from Shiv Murti and another near Delhi airport. The additional tunnel was made for the convenience of airport-bound commuters.

The Dwarka Expressway is divided into four packages:

  • Shiv Murti near Mahipalpur to Dwarka
  • Dwarka Urban Extension Road (UER) to Bajghera
  • Bajghera to Basai rail overbridge (Delhi-Haryana border)
  • Basai ROB to Kherki Daula

Dwarka Expressway is India's first elevated urban expressway

Being constructed at a cost of Rs 9,000 crore, Dwarka Expressway is India's first elevated urban expressway. The project which was first envisioned by the Haryana government in 2006, has missed several dealines, owing to NHAI’s strategic efforts to integrate slip roads from the Central Peripheral Road (CPR) and Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) with the carriageways of NH-8, the main highway.
