Delhi Metro to soon ban use of single-use plastic on its premises

With the aim to curb pollution and protection of environment, Delhi Metro is mulling for a complete ban on the use of single-use plastic on its premises. Officials, on Saturday, said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is in the process of framing the guidelines and announcements will be made soon in the matter. The initiative by civic bodies and various institutions has come in the light of PM Modi's initiative to curb the use of single-use plastic on the occasion of the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. 

"The issue regarding use/ban of plastic on Delhi Metro premises is being reviewed by the management from the perspective of all relevant guidelines, bylaws, statutory requirements on the subject. Taking into consideration all these aspects, the DMRC will be framing and issuing necessary guidelines for compliance by all its stakeholders in the next few days," Executive Director of Corporate Communications, DMRC Anuj Dayal said, as reported by news agency PTI.

Meanwhile, Delhi Metro has been taking a number of initiatives for the environment in the past, from use of solar power for ancillary usage at stations to making eco-friendly buildings.

New Delhi Metro corridor

Delhi Metro is all set to get a 4.2 km-long Grey Line which will connect urban village area of Najafgarh to the rapid transit network. As per officials, it is likely to open early next week. The Dwarka-Najafgarh corridor consists of three stations - Dwarka (interchange with Blue Line), Nangli and Najafgarh.

With the opening of this section, the Delhi Metro network will expand to 377 km with 274 stations, including the Noida -Greater Noida Aqua Line, Executive Director, Corporate Communication of the DMRC Anuj Dayal said.

PM Modi appeals to India to ban single-use plastic

In his address at the 74th UNGA summit on September 27, PM Modi spoke about India's aim to ban the use of single-use plastic in order to make ensure a healthier environment. Reading the words inscribed outside the UN building, PM Modi stated that India is working tirelessly to make the country single-use plastic-free. 

While entering the United Nations building, I read on a wall, 'no more single-use plastic'. I feel extremely delighted in informing this gathering, that today while I am addressing you, we are working tirelessly in India to make the country single-use plastic-free," PM Modi said at UNGA.
