New Delhi: India has remained at the center of world population data and this year was no different with many of the Indian cities especially the urban centers featuring in the top 10 list of populated cities in the report published by United Nations World Urbanisation Prospects on the occasion of World Population Day.
Delhi Leads the List from India
Delhi is leading the pack from India. It is the second most populated city of the world with currently over 33.8 million people residing in the national capital. Delhi, is followed by Mumbai and Kolkata respectively. India’s financial capital, Mumbai has landed the ninth spot in the list. It currently houses more than 21 million people. Kolkata also known as ‘City of Joy’ is currently given shelter to more than 15 million. Its global position was 18 in the list.

Bengaluru: Rank - 23,
As per the report, in India’s ‘Silicon Valley’ more than 14 million people are residing in the Karnataka Capital.
Chennai: Rank - 28
It has a population of more than 12 million. It landed the 28th spot in the list.
Hyderabad (34th spot), Ahmedabad (45th spot), Surat (50th spot), Pune (58th spot), Jaipur (112th spot) were some of the cities to be featured in the list.
Earlier in April 2023 , India overtook China and became the world’s most populous country.
According to UNFPA's The State of World Population Report, 2023, India's population has reached 1,428.6 million while China's stands at 1,425.7 million, a difference of 2.9 million.
July 11: World Population Day
The report was released on the occasion of World Population Day which is being celebrated annually on 11 July to focus attention on the urgency and importance of population issues. In 1989, the then-Governing Council of the UN Development Programme (UNDP) established the Day as an outgrowth of the interest generated by the Day of Five Billion, which was observed on 11 July 1987.
