No Religion Encourages Pollution: SC For Round-the-Year Cracker Ban to Fight Air Crisis

The Supreme Court questioned why the Delhi government delayed the ban until October 14, despite the order being in place.

New Delhi:  After Delhi residents defied cracker ban and celebrated Diwali with fireworks, resulting in heavy smog and dangerous air quality levels, Supreme Court on Monday pulled up Delhi Police and Delhi government for ir weak enforcement of ban, ting y only seized raw materials without taking equate action.

Never Ending Ban on Firecrackers

A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih directed Delhi Police Commissioner to immediately inform all stakeholders of ban order and ensure re’s sale or manufacture of crackers in capital.

“We direct Delhi Police Commissioner to form a special cell to ensure effective implementation of firecracker ban,” court said, furr instructing commissioner to submit a personal affidavit detailing steps taken to enforce ban.

SC Ask Delhi Government Regarding Delayed Ban

“ right to live in a pollution-free atmosphere is a fundamental right under Article 21 of Constitution. Prima facie, we are of view that religion promotes any activity that promotes pollution or compromises with health of people,” bench ted.

court also asked Delhi government to decide by vember 25 on enforcing a permanent ban on firecrackers, after consulting with relevant stakeholders.
