Delhi is facing a fresh surge in dengue cases, with 401 new infections recorded between September 22 and 28, according to official data from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The total number of dengue cases in the city this year has now reached 1,630.
The capital experienced a notable spike last month, with 1,052 cases reported until September 28. From September 15 to 21, the city recorded nearly 300 new cases, raising the total to 651. This followed an increase of 250 cases during the previous week, ending on September 14.
The worst-hit areas in the city are the South Delhi zone, followed by the Najafgarh zone, where the highest numbers of dengue cases have been reported.
Rise in Malaria and Chikungunya Cases
In addition to dengue, both malaria and chikungunya cases have seen a sharp rise this year. From September 22 to 28, Delhi reported 67 new malaria cases and 13 chikungunya cases.
The total number of malaria cases recorded so far this year stands at 430, compared to 321 cases during the same period in 2023. Chikungunya cases have also risen, with 55 cases reported in 2024, up from 24 cases in the same period last year.
Fatality Reported
The city has reported one dengue-related death this year. A 54-year-old patient succumbed to the disease at Lok Kalyan Hospital, according to the MCD. In 2023, Delhi saw 19 dengue-related fatalities.
Health authorities are urging residents to take preventive measures and seek medical attention if they experience symptoms of dengue, malaria, or chikungunya. The government has also ramped up efforts to curb mosquito breeding, especially with the monsoon season contributing to the rise in cases.
