Chennai: Heavy rains continue to lash several isolated areas in Tamil Nadu, bringing daily life to a standstill and disrupting major services.

Visuals from the city depict relentless rainfall leading to significant waterlogging on roads.

Heavy Rains Batter Tamil Nadu, Several Areas Witness Waterlogging

Various parts of Chennai experienced extremely heavy rainfall, with Kathivakkam and Manali recording 23 cm and 21 cm, respectively. Cholavaram saw 30 cm, Red Hills received 28 cm, and Avadi registered 25 cm. A depression in the west-central and adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest at 14 km per hour, crossing the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coasts near Puducherry and Nellore around 4:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin visited rain-affected areas in Chennai's Kolathur Assembly Constituency and distributed relief materials. He assured that the Tamil Nadu Government is prepared for any situation, emphasizing that precautionary measures have been implemented statewide.

DMK leader TKS Elangovan noted that the water receded quickly, a testament to the state government's efforts over the past two years.

Elangovan said, "If rain persists for 3-4 days, issues will arise. In the past, such as during Jayalalitha’s tenure, we faced severe floods in 2015. With heavy rainfall, challenges are expected. We're currently laying pipelines, and although there was some waterlogging for two days after the last rains, this time the water receded rapidly. This reflects the effectiveness of our initiatives over the last two years."

Elangovan also mentioned that all DMK ministers are actively assessing the flood situation and providing assistance to the public.
