'Dreamers, Doers': US Envoy Praises Indian Women on Durga Puja, Calls for Empowerment
The US envoy also praised Indian women for their role in strengthening ties between the United States and India.
New Delhi: US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, extended his warm greetings on the occasion of Durga Puja, lauding Indian women for their contributions as both "dreamers and doers." In a video message shared on X, Garcetti highlighted the festival as a celebration of women's strength, courage, and perseverance.
"Indian women and girls I meet are dreamers and doers. They are leading our relationship forward, becoming entrepreneurs, public servants, activists, and so much more," he said.
Durga Puja, according to Garcetti, is a special time to recognize not only the efforts of women but also their allies in creating a more equitable world. He emphasized that this festival serves as a moment to reflect on the power of women to overcome obstacles and inspire change.
"Durga Puja is a vibrant and wonderful occasion to celebrate the resilience, bravery, and determination of women," Garcetti said. "It offers an opportunity to honour the relentless work of women and their allies who strive to create a more just and equitable world," he added.
The US envoy also praised Indian women for their role in strengthening ties between the United States and India. He described the women and girls he has met in India as "changemakers, innovators, and leaders," playing significant roles in various fields including entrepreneurship, activism, and public service.
Garcetti emphasized that women and girls are key drivers of progress for both India and the world. He stressed the importance of providing women with the necessary tools and opportunities to succeed, particularly in education and the workforce.
"Women and girls are powerhouses for India and the world. To benefit from their potential, we need to ensure they have the tools for success—ensuring girls stay in school, pursue higher education, and engage in entrepreneurship. It's equally important that women not only enter the workforce but remain in it," he added.
In closing, the Ambassador expressed his admiration for the joyous spirit of Durga Puja and reiterated the US's commitment to promoting religious freedom, dignity, and rights for all.
"I love the vibrant and joyful spirit of Durga Puja, celebrating diversity while promoting religious harmony. We are committed to fostering religious freedom, rights, and dignity for all," Garcetti said.
Durga Puja, or Durgotsava, is an annual celebration in honour of the Hindu goddess Durga, marking her triumph over Mahishasur, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Beyond its religious significance, the festival also represents unity, compassion, and the rich cultural heritage of India.
