Guwahati: An e-rickshaw driver in Guwahati was looted by miscreants at gunpoint in the Paltan Bazar area of Guwahati, police said on Saturday.

According to police, the two men travelled in the e-rickshaw of the driver for one kilometer following which they looted his phone and money. The miscreants also threatened the driver that they will take his e-rickshaw vehicle.

Police said that based on the CCTV footage, efforts are underway to nab the accused in the incident.

Earlier in June, the locals of the Hedayatpur area in Guwahati apprehended an alleged armed robber and claimed that the accused was nabbed moments after he attempted to rob a jewellery shop near Guwahati Club.

“The entire incident was captured on CCTV. The alleged robber, identified as Abhishek Thakur, entered the shop disguised as a customer,” police said.

While initially browsing jewelry sets, Thakur sprayed the shop owner and a staff member with an unknown substance. In the ensuing chaos, he grabbed a jewelry set and tried to escape. However, the shop owner and his staff quickly raised the alarm and pursued him. Thakur was soon captured by a group of locals on the roadside.

Despite wielding a homemade pistol, Thakur was subdued and turned over to the Latasil Police. Investigations revealed that Thakur, a resident of Chetia village in Lakhimpur and originally from Bihar , works for an NGO in Guwahati. During questioning, he admitted that his financial difficulties were the motive behind the robbery, and he acquired the weapon from the Gandhi Basti area of the city.
