Raipur: An encounter broke out between security forces and Maoists in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh on Saturday. According to a senior police official the gunfight broke out in the evening, which led to a major battle in the jungle area.
The police official stated that the encounter began around 6 pm in the forested area of south Abujhmaad, located on the border of Narayanpur and Dantewada districts. A joint team of security personnel, part of an ongoing anti-Maoist operation, came under fire from Maoists, which escalated into a gunbattle.
The operation involves personnel from the District Reserve Guard (DRG) units of four districts, as well as the Special Task Force (STF), who are working together to tackle the Maoist threat in the region.
The gunfight has continued intermittently, with both sides exchanging fire. The situation is still ongoing, and further details are awaited, said the police official.
Abujhmaad, a dense forest area that was once considered a stronghold of Maoist insurgents, has seen a significant increase in security operations in recent months. Many Maoists have been neutralised by security forces during these operations, with efforts to clear the area continuing.
Further details regarding the ongoing encounter are being awaited.
