Farmers' unions urge Centre to accept main demands, warn of firm steps if Jan 4 talks fail

Addressing a press briefing, the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha warned that it will take firm steps if the Centre failed to accept its main demands in the January 4 meet.

dressing a press conference on Friday, Sanyukt Kisan Morcha warned that it will take firm steps if Centre failed to accept its main demands in January 4 meeting. Refuting tion that 50 per cent of issues have been resolved, Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yav stressed that Union government was yet to agree to scrapping of farm laws and legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price. In scenario that next round of talks does t yield desired outcome, he declared that farmers will conduct a march on  Kundli-Manesar-Palwal highway on January 6.

Moreover, he ded that an awareness campaign shall be carried out throughout country from January 6-20. Speaking to media, Haryana farmer leer Vikas Sisar threatened that all malls and petrol pumps will be shut down in Haryana and protests shall be organised against BJP and JJP leers if Centre does t respond positively to unions. ditionally, unions indicated that farmers protesting on  Shahjahanpur (Rajasthan-Haryana) border might move towards Delhi in a worst-case scenario.

Protests against farm laws

From what started as a scheduled protest in national capital on vember 26 and 27, 2020, thousands of farmers are still protesting at borders of Delhi against  Farmers' Produce Tre and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and  Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020. While Centre appealed to m to shift to Nirankari Samagam Ground in Burari, only a section of farmers heeded this call. Apart from 6 rounds of meetings that took place between Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Tomar and farmers' leers, Union Home Minister Amit Shah also met m on one occasion.

During deliberations held on Tuesday, Centre agreed t to penalise farmers for stubble burning and to continue present mechanism of giving subsided electricity for agricultural use. Maintaining that talks were held in a cordial atmosphere, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar appealed to farmer leers to send home elderly, women and children given chilly winter season. Meanwhile, unions rejected Centre's offer to form a committee to examine agrarian laws.  next round of discussions on January 4 will focus on three farm laws and MSP.
