Five Belgian Shepherd dogs inducted in Mumbai police; six Labrador puppies inducted in Chandigarh police

Puppy patrol! All the good boys will now be training for our security.

Five Belgian Shepherd dogs have been inducted into the Mumbai police force to help in investigation and detection of crime, an official said Friday.

The canines will be part of the police's Dog Squad, he said.

"Five new Belgian Shepherd breed dogs have been inducted by the city police. They are going to help police in their investigation and detection efforts," said police spokesperson DCP Manjunath Singe.

He said five lady constables have been deployed for handling these canines.

The constables will be responsible for their training and day-to-day operations, the DCP added.

On Friday, Chandigarh police recruited six new Labrador puppies into the police squad. These golden and black lab puppies are aged between 3 to 3 and a half months were bought for Rs. 28,000 each. 

These police puppies will be soon put under training. 

DSP said, "These labradors are of the Champion's breed and would be sent to National Training Centre of Dogs (NTCD) near Panchkula for training in March."

According to the officials, five puppies would be trained as sniffers to identify explosives, while one would be trained to be a tracker. 

The police official said that it takes six months to train explosive sniffers and nine months for trackers, so by November 2019, these puppies will be trained enough to join the police dog squad. 

The tracker dogs are used significantly for murder and theft cases.

• The first dogs trained to be in the police force were German Shepherds.
• The canine force can perform a variety of tasks including tracking, explosives detection, mob control, narcotics detection, search and rescue, mine detection, and detection of poisonous substance.
• Life at the training center begins quite early, at 5 am where the police dogs have an intensive regime of feeding, exercising, grooming and training.
