Flash floods hit J&K's Poonch; Chenab river nears danger mark in Ramban
The water level of river Chenab is continuously rising and is approaching the danger mark in Ramban district of Jammu.

Heavy rains in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir continues to create trouble for people living in the low-lying areas. Rains in upper reaches have caused flash floods in the areas near Mendhar town in Poonch leading to a flash floods like situation. A sudden rise in the water level has led to a disruption in traffic in the Duggi area of Mendhar town. Water level also rose in Sangala Chowk area of Mendhar town. The other areas of Doda and Kishtwar too are receiving rains in upper reaches.
The water level of river Chenab is continuously rising and is approaching the danger mark in Ramban district of Jammu. Issuing an advisory in the matter, Deputy Commissioner of Ramban informed, “As of 8:00 am, the water level in River Chenab has risen to 20.40 meters. This is approaching the dangerous point range, which is at 23.27 meters. Due to the increasing water level, it is essential for everyone to exercise caution and stay away from the river banks to ensure their safety”. Notably, River Chenab in Akhnoor area of Jammu has washed away over 40 structures over the last few days.
The Weather Department in its advisory said, “From July 26 to 28, the weather forecast indicates partly to generally cloudy conditions during the daytime with the possibility of light to moderate thundershowers in many areas. There may also be isolated instances of heavy rainfall, particularly over the Jammu region, mainly occurring during the late night or early morning hours. From July 29 to 31, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy. However, during this period, there is a warning of potential risks such as flash floods, mudslides, and landslides.”
“As a precautionary measure, people are advised to exercise caution and avoid proximity to streams, rivers, and other vulnerable locations throughout this period,” the advisory added.
