Former Supreme Court Judge and Lokayukta N Venkatachala passes away

Former Supreme Court judge and Lokayukta of Karnataka N Venkatachala passed away on Wednesday at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital at around 7 in the morning

Former Supreme Court judge N. Venkatachala passed away on Wednesday at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital at around 7 in the morning. Venkatachala was brought to the hospital at around 6:30 AM in the morning in an unresponsive state and was declared no more at around 7 AM. Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa remembered the former SC judge and tweeted that people will remember him for his fight against corruption.

Appointed SC Judge in 1992

N Venkatachala was born in July 1930 to an agriculturist family and obtained his law degree from Mysore University. Soon after his graduation, he enrolled as an advocate in the High Court of Karnataka and practiced at Bangalore in civil, criminal and constitutional matters. Venkatachala served as Legal Adviser to the University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal from 1963 to 1973 and to the Bangalore University from 1970 to 1973 before working as a Government Pleader from 1968 to 1973 and subsequently as a High Court Government Advocate between 1973 to 1977. In November 1977, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court. He was appointed a Permanent Judge in September 1978 and In 1990, he was part of a tribunal under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. He was appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court in May 1992 and just two months later, In July 1992, he was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court. N Venkatchala retired from the post in July 1995. Following his retirement, Justice Venkatachala also served as Lokayukta for the State of Karnataka.
