Ganderbal: At least 7 migrants have died and around 5 injured after terrorists targeted non-locals in Jammu and Kashmir's (J&K) Ganderbal on Sunday. The attack comes just days after new government formation under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. Security agencies have cordoned off the area where the shooting took place and a search operation is underway to nab the terrorists.

IG Kashmir Zone police VK Birdi has arrived at terror incident site in Gagangeer, Ganderbal as security agencies launch search operation.

Reacting to the terror incident, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “The dastardly terror attack on civilians in Gagangir, J&K, is a despicable act of cowardice. Those involved in this heinous act will not be spared and will face the harshest response from our security forces. At this moment of immense grief, I extend my sincerest condolences to the families of the deceased. Praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

Meanwhile sources have said that a freshly infiltrated terrorists group is believed to be behind the attack in Ganderbal. The terrorists likely infiltrated from North Kashmir's Line of Confrol (LoC). The security has been beefed up in Ganderbal following the terror attack.

Speaking on the incident, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said, “Very sad news of a dastardly & cowardly attack on non-local labourers at Gagangir in Sonamarg region. These people were working on a key infrastructure project in the area. 2 have been killed & 2-3 more have been injured in this militant attack. I strongly condemn this attack on unarmed innocent people & send my condolences to their loved ones."

"The casualty figure from the Gagangir attack is not final as there are a number of injured labourers, both local & non-local. Praying that the injured make a full recovery as the more seriously injured are being referred to SKIMS, Srinagar," Omar Abdullah added.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has said, “I strongly condemn the horrific terror attack on innocent laborers in Gagangir, Sonamarg, Jammu & Kashmir, who were engaged in a vital infrastructure project. I offer my humble tribute to the martyred laborers and extend my deepest condolences to their families during this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers are with the injured for a swift and full recovery.”

Former J&K CM Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “Strongly condemn the killing of two non local innocent labourers in the Gagangier area in Ganderbal, Kashmir. This is the third killing in the last three days—an act against humanity. The enemies of peace must be dealt with firmly. My condolences to their families and prayers for the injured!”

Speaking on the cowardly incident, Apni Party leader Altaf Bukhari has said, “It is shocking that terrorists targeted and killed two non-local laborers, and injured two others in the Gagangeer area of Kangan, in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal, where they were working on a tunnel project. This tragic incident occurred just two days after a migrant worker from Bihar was similarly killed by terrorists in south Kashmir's Shopian district on Friday. These innocent labourers are here for their livelihood and to support their families back home. It seems that the perpetrators of such terror attacks are hell-bent on disturbing the prevailing peace.”

Kashmiri Pandit Sangharash Samiti (KPSS) has asked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and J&K police to put security on alert in areas where Kashmiri Pandits reside as they’ve been targeted in the past whenever such incidents have taken place.
