Kanpur: Continuous rainfall in the mountains and active monsoon showers in the plains have caused water levels to surge in the Ganga River, posing a threat to several ghats in Kanpur city.

The rising waters have submerged ghats and affected daily life, such as Sarsaiya Ghat, Golaghat, and Bhairav Ghat.

The ongoing heavy rainfall has caused a significant rise in the river's water level, raising concerns among local authorities and residents.

Officials said that the situation is being closely monitored, and necessary measures are being undertaken to prevent potential flooding. The swollen river has already begun to encroach on the ghats, disrupting daily activities along the riverbank.

Residents and devotees who visit these ghats are urged to exercise caution and stay updated with information from local authorities, officials said.

Earlier today, the water level of the Ganga in Varanasi rose, submerging the Tulsi Ghat.

Commuters were not able to use the underpass due to the high pressure of water that caused major waterlogging on the roads.

Earlier, the Bihar government on Wednesday ordered that at least seventy-six schools in the rural Patna district will remain closed for three days as the water level of the Ganga river crossed the danger mark amidst incessant rainfall in northern India. According to the notification issued by the state government, the decision to close the schools in rural Patna was taken considering the safety of the students and teachers.

District Magistrate Chandrashekhar Singh stated, citing the government's order, "Total 76 government schools in eight blocks of Patna district will remain closed till September 21, 2024, in view of the rising trend of water level in the Ganga river."

Pertinently, in a tragic incident, a teacher of a government school fell into the Ganga river near Patna last month and got swept away by the strong currents.
