Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Likely in Delhi on June 29, 30

Rain related deaths in the last 24 hours in Mangaluru surged to six as two auto drivers were electrocuted from a live electric wire hanging from a pole. 

An independent weather agency said, “Monsoon is expected to reach Delhi on the weekend.” The monsoon current typically enters Delhi between June 27 and 29. Last year, it arrived on June 26 while the first monsoon showers of 2022 were recorded on June 30, according to official data.

The weather department has predicted localized flooding of roads, water logging in low-lying areas and closure of underpasses due to very heavy rainfall in Delhi on June 29 and 30.

Heavy to very heavy rain is likely in the national capital on the weekend, the India Meteorological Department said as parts of the city were lashed by showers on Thursday, bringing Delhiites much-needed respite from heat. IMD mentioned that a thunderstorm accompanied by lightning and gusty winds with speeds reaching 30 to 40 kmph is very likely at isolated places over Delhi and other states on June 28.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over Delhi on June 29 and June 30, it said.

"The monsoon is expected to reach Delhi on June 29 or 30," Mahesh Palawat of Skymet Weather Services said. The monsoon current typically enters Delhi between June 27 and 29.

Residents are advised to check for traffic congestion before leaving and avoid areas prone to waterlogging.

The weather conditions are expected to cause minor traffic disruptions and increase the chance of vehicle accidents due to water accumulation on roads. 

For July 1 and 2, the IMD forecasts thunderstorms with moderate rain, with temperatures steady at a high of 34°C and a low of 27°C. Wind speeds will continue to vary, maintaining a range of 25-35 km/h.

The weather on June 29 is expected to be slightly cooler, with a high of 36°C and a low of 28°C. The city will likely experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with winds reaching speeds of 30-40 km/h. On June 30, temperatures will drop further to 34°C, with moderate to heavy rain and gusty winds.

As predicted by IMD for June 27, temperatures will range from a high of 38°C to a low of 29°C. The IMD also predicts very light rain or thunderstorms with similar gusty winds. On June 28, the forecast includes light to moderate rain or thunderstorms, with temperatures similar to the previous day and wind speeds reaching up to 35 km/h.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in parts of Delhi, along with strong winds blowing at a speed of 20-30km per hour throughout the day.

An IMD official said, “The intensity of rain will increase. On Friday and Saturday, parts of the city could receive moderate rainfall. While on Sunday June 30, there are chances of moderate to heavy rainfall, accompanied with gusty winds.”

The IMD's seven-day forecast suggests that the rainy weather will continue in Delhi until July 1. The maximum temperature in the city is anticipated to be around 39 degrees Celsius, as per the weather agency.

Parts of Delhi and nearby regions received spells of heavy rainfall, bringing much-needed respite from the sweltering heat. Visuals shared on social media showed several parts of the city receiving heavy rainfall.
