'Assam Govt's Bold Move': Bills Banning Polygamy and Child Marriage To Be Tabled in February
The much-anticipated legislation has completed all formalities and will be introduced in the Assembly next month.

Guwahati: Assam government is poised to present bills outlawing polygamy and child marriage in State during upcoming Budget Session of Assam Legislative Assembly, commencing on February 5, said Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

much-anticipated legislation has completed all formalities and will be introduced in Assembly next month. Confirming this, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma who was briefing media at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Dispur, on Thursday said that all formalities have been completed.
" Committee which was constituted to make bills have submitted ir recommendations and context, we will bring bill in next session of Assam Legislative Assembly in February," Chief Minister said.

State government h explored all technical aspects of bill banning polygamy and in all likelihood it will need consent of President inste of Governor, who generally put consent on bills passed by Legislative Assembly.
Assam has recently seen two crackdowns against child marriage and after bills banning both child marriage and polygamy is introduced and passed by Assembly, a stringent law will be in place to check offenders.

Earlier Chief Minister Sarma h said that need for bill banning polygamy is required in order to ensure dignity of women. He also h said that most of child marriages are result of polygamy being in practice in some remote areas of State as well as among minority community in particular.
