Record 7.85 Crore+ ITRs filed in FY 23-24 for all assessment years up to Oct 31: Govt

The Income Tax Department of India has achieved a significant milestone by registering a record number of Income Tax Returns (ITRs) filed until October 31, 2023. This date marked the deadline for the filing of ITRs (excluding ITR 7) for taxpayers not involved in any international or specified domestic transactions that required auditing of their books of account.
According to official statements from the Finance Ministry, "More than 7.65 crore ITRs were filed for AY 2023-24 till 31st October 2023, which is 11.7% higher as compared to the 6.85 crore ITRs filed for AY 2022-23 till 7th November 2022, the due date for filing such ITRs in the preceding year. Further, the total number of ITRs filed in FY 2023-24 for all assessment years up to 31st October 2023 stands at 7.85 crore, an all-time high when compared to a total of 7.78 crore ITRs filed in FY 2022-23."
Remarkably, out of the 7.65 crore ITRs filed for AY 2023-24, over 7.51 crore ITRs have already been verified. Additionally, out of the 7.51 crore verified ITRs, 7.19 crore have already been processed as of October 31, 2023, signifying that nearly 96% of the verified ITRs have been processed.

The same date also served as the due date for filing crucial statutory forms such as Form 10B, 10BB, and Form 3CEB. The Finance Ministry stated, "More than 1.44 crore various types of statutory forms were filed up to October 31, 2023."
The Finance Ministry lauded the efficiency of the e-filing portal, emphasising that during the peak filing days, the portal efficiently handled the traffic, offering taxpayers and tax professionals a seamless experience for submitting forms and ITRs. This achievement was widely appreciated on various platforms, including social media.
The Income Tax Department also provided support to taxpayers through various channels, including inbound calls, outbound calls, live chats, Webex, and co-browsing sessions, the Ministry stated. The helpdesk team actively resolved queries received through the Department's Twitter handle using Online Response Management (ORM), ensuring near real-time assistance to taxpayers and stakeholders.
The statement from the Income Tax Department expressed gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for their compliance and urged those who have not yet filed their forms and ITRs to do so promptly. The Department emphasised the importance of continued timely tax-related compliance.
"The IT Department expresses its gratitude to all the taxpayers and tax professionals for their support in compliance and requests the attention of taxpayers who are yet to file the Forms and ITRs, to file them. The Department urges all taxpayers and tax professionals to continue to make tax-related compliances in time," the statement read.
