The swearing-in ceremony of first lieutenant governor of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Union Territory (UT), Girish Chandra Murmu is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, October 31 at 12.45 pm in Srinagar's Rajbhavan followed by the swearing ceremony of the Ladakh’s lieutenant governor at 7.30 pm in Leh. Murmu reportedly arrived at Jammu and Kashmir’s capital Srinagar for his swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, October 30, which will mark the official reorganization of the State of Jammu and Kashmir into two union territories namely J&K UT and Ladakh after the historic decision of abrogation of article 370 by the Central Government.

About the new lieutenant governor of J&K UT
Girish Chandra Murmu, the new Governor of J&K UT, is a retired IAS officer from the 1985-batch Gujarat-cadre who was serving as the Expenditure Secretary under the Union Ministry of Finance until his term expired in October and is set to commence as the Lt Governor of J&K UT. GC Murmu who is 59, is one of the youngest governors in the country. Murmu is also known to be a trusted aide of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah from the time when Modi helmed the State of Gujarat. Murmu had served as the Principal Secretary to Narendra Modi when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The two new Governors will be replacing Satya Pal Malik, who served as the 13th and last Governor of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The State of Jammu and Kashmir was split into two union territories namely Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on August 5 this year after the Parliament approved the Abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A, followed by Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill 2019. The two new union territories - J&K and Ladakh will officially come into existence on October 31 after the swearing-in of two lieutenant governors.
