Supreme court of India has refused to acknowledge the right to sell lotteries as a fundamental right. State governments were allowed to ban buying and selling of lotteries in their state. Now, only 13 states in India allow lotteries and the rest have banned them. These states are Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Manipur, Sikkim, Nagaland and Goa. Former major centres like Tamilnadu and Karnataka have now completely banned lotteries. The ban on lotteries has been imposed due to gambling addiction and social stigma which comes along with it. Many illegal lotteries are also being operated now across the country.

Goa lottery is one of the most famous lotteries in India. The Goa state allows buying and selling of lotteries in the state to provide its people with an opportunity to try their luck. The lotteries are drawn thrice a day.

Lottery buyers can check the result of the lotteries on the official website of Goa Directorate of Small Savings and Lotteries. Goa state government conducts lotteries with the view to provide help to the citizens of Goa state. The revenue collected through the selling of lotteries is used to provide better infrastructure and facilities to Goans. The average price ticket of Goa state lottery is 5-10 rupees.
