Bhubaneswar: Twenty-four coastal villages in Odisha were recognised by Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO as 'Tsunami Rey'.
recognition was given during 2nd Global Tsunami Symposium held in Indonesia on November 11, a statement said.

se villages are located in Balasore, Bhrak, Kendrapa, Jagatsinghpur, Puri and Ganjam districts, it said.
Besides, Tsunami Rey Recognition Certificates were renewed for two villages in state. se villages are Noliasahi in Jagatsinghpur district and Venkatraipur in Ganjam district. y were recognised as Tsunami Rey in 2020.

Various activities, including training of stakeholders, community awareness programmes, preparation of tsunami management plans, conducting mock drills and identification of evacuation routes, were done in se 24 tsunami-prone villages, statement said.
Members of National Tsunami Rey Recognition Board, comprising scientists of Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services and officers of NDMA, visited se coastal villages for verification of 12 indicators on which y were judged in September.

" NTRB members after verification of indicators recommended IOC-UNESCO for recognising communities of se 26 coastal villages of Odisha as Tsunami Rey Communities," statement said.
government has identified 381 villages in state as tsunami-prone. Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) was working to make coastal communities of all tsunami-prone habitation as 'Tsunami Rey', officials said.
