Government approves construction of 1.23 lakh houses under PMAY-Urban

The government has approved 630 approvals from 10 participating states for construction of 1.23 lakh houses under the PMAY-Urban, the Centre's flagship scheme.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in a statement stated that the 47th Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC) had approved 630 approvals from 10 participating states for the construction of 1.23 lakh houses. The overall investment will be Rs.4,988 crore. In addition, the Central government will render assistance of Rs.1,805 crore. With this latest development, the total number of sanctioned houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), the Centre's flagship housing scheme has risen to more than 90 lakh as against the target of 1.12 crore by 2022. The CSMC is currently headed by Union Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Durga Shanker Mishra.

Hardeep Singh Puri thanks PM Modi's leadership

Confirming the sanction of 1.23 lakh new houses, the Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri gave the credit to the 'positive leadership' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Last month, Puri had stated that the housing target would be met by 2020, almost two years before the official government deadline. PM Modi too had focused on the fact that India was building 'millions of homes for the poor and the middle classes' at the Bloomberg Global Business Forum on Wednesday. Furthermore, he urged foreign companies to invest in this sector.

10 states benefit 

So far, West Bengal has got the highest chunk of approvals with 27,746 houses, followed by Tamil Nadu (26,709), Gujarat (20,903), Punjab (10,332), Chhattisgarh (10,079), Jharkhand (8,674), Madhya Pradesh (8,314), Karnataka (5,021), Rajasthan (2,822) and Uttarakhand (2,501). While the total investment in the flagship scheme is Rs.5.54 lakh crore, the Union and state governments contribute Rs.3.01 lakh crore leaving the rest to the private sector. Already, the Centre has released Rs.57,778 crore. Out of the 53.5 lakh houses that have been grounded for construction, more than 27 lakh houses have been completed.
