Gutka Valued at Over Rs 32 Seized in Thane District; One Held

Thane: Police have seized gutka valued at over Rs 32 lakh in Maharashtra ’s Thane district and arrested one of four persons transporting banned substance, an official said on Friday.

Acting on inputs, police intercepted two tempos near Soma Nagar locality of Bhiwandi on Thursday morning. vehicles were loed with cartons of gutka, he said.

Gutka, which contains tobacco and or harmful products and can cause cancer, is banned in Maharashtra.

While police were carrying out an inspection, three persons, including driver of one of tempos, escaped from spot. Police arrested driver of or tampo and identified him as Ankit Rajendra Pal (26).

seized gutka is worth over Rs 32 lakh, said assistant inspector S B Mahale of Bhoiwa police station, ding that a probe is underway to ascertain source of consignment and its intended destination.
