Helmet in Hand, Bluetooth Around Sanjoy Roy's Neck: Has CCTV Captured Key Evidence in Abhaya Probe?
Kolkata Rape-Murder: CCTV shows Sanjoy Roy entering the seminar hall with a Bluetooth device hanging around his neck.
Kolkata: As the investigation into the Kolkata rape-murder case continues, a CCTV footage has surfaced showing the prime suspect, Sanjoy Roy, walking through the corridor on the fourth floor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The footage, captured on the night of August 9, showed Roy entering the seminar hall with a Bluetooth device hanging around his neck, just hours before he allegedly committed the crime.
The same Bluetooth device was later found at the crime scene, and when officials connected it to Roy's mobile phone, it successfully paired, linking him directly to the incident.
During interrogation, Sanjoy Roy reportedly confessed to the crime after being confronted with CCTV evidence, according to multiple media sources. The police revealed that before arriving at the hospital at 1:03 AM on the night of the junior doctor's rape and murder, Roy had visited two brothels in Kolkata. On the night of August 8, he went to the Sonagachi red-light district, consumed alcohol, and visited the brothels one after the other.
He then made his way to the hospital after midnight. CCTV footage captured him entering and leaving the seminar hall, where the junior doctor had ‘gone to sleep’.
Sanjoy Roy, Sandip Ghosh to Undergo Polygraph Test
Meanwhile, a special court in Kolkata allowed a polygraph test to be conducted on Sanjoy Roy. The court has already given its nod to conduct the lie-detection test on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college, and four other doctors who were on duty at the hospital in the intervening night of August 8-9, they said.
Roy (33) joined the Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer in 2019. Police have alleged that he was married at least four times and was a known "womaniser".
The accused, who is a trained boxer, got close to a few senior police officers over the years, following which he was moved to the Kolkata Police Welfare Board and posted at the police outpost at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. A team of experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi will conduct the tests, the officials said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is also awaiting Roy's DNA and psychoanalysis reports, which will give further direction to its investigation, they said.
The CBI told the Supreme Court on Thursday that there was an attempt to cover up the rape and killing of the post-graduate medic by the local police as the crime scene was altered by the time the federal agency took over the probe. The rape and killing of the junior doctor in a seminar hall of the hospital has sparked widespread protests. The medic's body with severe injury marks was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital's chest department in the morning of August 9. Roy was arrested the following day.
