New Delhi: Erythritol, a popular artificial sweetener, may significantly increase risk of blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes, revealed a recent study led by Cleveland Clinic. study highlights potential dangers of this sugar substitute, commonly found in products like yogurt, ice cream, diet sodas, and protein bars. According to study, erythritol les to more active blood platelets, reby rasing risk of clotting. 

While speaking to Republic Network Dr Babul Bansal, Surgical Oncology Department (AIIMS, Delhi) said, “Erythritol and sorbitol as sweeteners should be avoided as y severely affect liver.”

“Erythritol not only increases risk of heart attack and stroke but can also cause mild to severe digestive issues if you consume large amounts of it. That includes bloating, cramping, and diarrhea,” he said. 

Experts have cautioned that study's small sample size means its findings should be interpreted with caution.

WHO’s warning on artificial sweeteners 

Noneless, World Heart Organization h previously warned that artificial sweeteners, including aspartame and stevia, could be linked to higher risks of 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mortality.

Dr. Bansal cautioned against excessive use of erythritol. “We should avoid using sugar alcohols like erythritol and sorbitol as sweeteners. If ir use is necessary, it is important to consume m in moderation.”
