Himachal Pradesh witnesses rise in number of Snow Leopard, officials call it a 'good sign'

According to a report, the wildlife wing of the forest department has said that the population of Snow Leopard in Himachal Pradesh is more than 100.

Endangered sw leopards have me a comeback in Himachal Presh, a news ncy reported. According to Wildlife Wing of Forest Department, number of sw leopards has risen above 100. According to a report published in a national daily, recent sightings of feline in Spiti Valley can be credited to constant efforts of state government and conservationists. 

"A good sign"

Natural Conservation Foundation of India conducted a survey in Miyar, Thandi, Chandra and Bagha and spotted 49 sw leopards, national media reported. Savita, chief conservator reportedly said that for survey, y followed landscape option approach under which y observed that animals, ir prey base as well as ir livelihood. She ded that final survey would be completed by end of March. Sanjay Kumar Dhiman, a wildlife official, who previously wrote Cats of Himalayas reportedly said that frequent sightings of sw leopards is a good sign and points towards a healthy environment.

Javekar celebrates International Sw Leopard Day

Meanwhile, Union Environment Minister Prakash Javekar on February 26 sought global cooperation to double population of sw leopards in coming deces at  launch of  first national protocol to enumerate sw leopard population in India. Javekar was dressing  inaugural session of fourth steering committee meeting of Global Sw Leopard and Ecosystem Protection (GSLEP) programme at Vigyan Bhawan on occasion of International Sw Leopard Day. "All countries can work toger and enumerate number of sw leopards. We will strive to double sw leopard population in world in coming dece," said Prakash Javekar.

Minister also pointed out that importance of enumeration of such animals is to double ir population as early as possible. " two-day conference is very important because I believe that discussions, deliberations, cooperation, learning from each or and sharing best practices make us all rich," Javekar said.
