Himanta Biswa Sarma, NEDA Convenor and Assam's Finance Minister, has demanded a re-verification of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list for Assam that was released on Saturday. According to him, a lot of names were allegedly excluded in the final NRC list because of the 'manipulation' of legacy data.

Sarma has also alleged that several Indians were excluded as the authorities have refused to accept refugee certificates as documents. He has demanded a 20 percent reverification on the bordering districts. In a tweet, he also stated that authorities have refused to accept refugee certificates of those who have migrated from Bangladesh prior to 1971.
Assam government releases final NRC list
The Assam government on Saturday released its final NRC list. A total of 3.29 crore people had applied for the NRC, with just over 3.11 crore making it to the final list. This meant that just over 19 lakh names were excluded, including those who had not made their submissions. Those whose names are not yet in the NRC have a number of recourses available to them, including the High Courts and the Supreme Court, with the Foreigners Tribunal (FS) being the only agency that can deem someone a foreigner. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar stated on Saturday that the excluded persons from the NRC final list can make an appeal in the court. He further assured them that justice will be rendered in the matter.
