Imphal: As violent ethnic conflict in Manipur refused to die down, National People’s Party (NPP), a key ally of ruling Bharatiya Janata Party ( BJP ), announced withdrawal of support to state. In a major setback for govt led by Chief Minister N Biren Sigh, NPP-led by Conr Sangma has blamed him for failing to control violence in Manipur.

This could mean a significant shift in political landscape of violence-hit state as NPP holds seven seats in 60-member House. However, this development is unlikely to destabilize government given BJP's clear majority with 32 seats. NPP MLAs in Manipur assembly include Sheikh Noorul Hassan (Kshetrigao AC), Khuraijam Loken Singh (Wangoi AC), Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam AC), Thongam Shanti Singh (Moirang AC), Mayanglambam Rameshwar Singh (Kakching AC), N. Kayisii (Tubi AC), and Janghemlung Panmei (Tamenglong AC).

Earlier in August 2023, Kuki People’s Alliance (KPA) which has 2 seats in legislative assembly, withdrew its support to Biren Singh government.

ditionally, BJP also has support of six MLAs from JD(U), and five MLAs from Naga People’s Front (NPF) alongside three independent MLAs. This ensures BJP's control over govt despite cracks being appearing within coalition.

Th angry mob also vandalised houses of several MLAs in wake of recent deaths.

north-eastern state has been reeling under ethnic strife between Kuki and Meitei communities since May 3, 2023.
