Days after a 24-year-old Dalit Christian youth was killed in front of his 21-year-old pregnant wife in the city of Hyderabad, comes an incident that bears an eerie similarity to the 'Honour Killing' case.
On September 19, a young married couple was attacked near Gokul theatre in Hyderabad's Erragadda area in broad daylight. The CCTV footage of the brutal attack shows how the couple were mercilessly attacked in the city. The couple was seated on a two-wheeler when a man wearing a black helmet parked his motorcycle next to theirs. The man got down his bike, took off his helmet and quickly opened his bag to remove a weapon which looked like a sickle. The assailant attacked the husband multiple times. Next, the woman was targeted.
As the couple continued to come under attack with the same weapon by the assailant, a bystander tried to intervene, but the attacker threatened him in return. Very quickly, a sizeable crowd gathered and soon another bystander tried to intervene by kicking the attacker. But this didn't deter the assailant either and he continued to attack the couple. Despite the presence of a large crowd, the assailant then successfully managed to flee from the crime scene.
Both the husband and wife were injured in the attack and were rushed to a hospital by the bystanders. However, the woman's condition is said to be critical while the man is out of danger.
In a shocking revelation, it emerged that the attacker was the girl's father who was upset with his daughter's wedding with a man who did not belong to their caste. 20-year-old Madhavi, a member of the OBC community, had secretly married 24-year-old Sandeep, who belongs to the Dalit community, on September 12th.
Madhavi's father, who is a goldsmith, had allegedly threatened the couple with dire consequences, following which police counselled both sides and urged them to resolve the issue amicably. Following this, the father, who was in regular contact with the couple, asked them to meet him on September 19th near Gokul Theatre on the pretext of gifting them clothes.
The accused has now been arrested and the Hyderabad cops have now lodged a case under IPC section 307 and SC/ST atrocities act against him.
