'To bring a change, be change'
y say, to bring a change, be change. But hardly do we act on it. But re are people who really work on it. Meet Ram Singh, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya. He is a bureaucrat, acting as an nt of change.
Ram Singh, IAS (2008 batch), walks out of his residence every Saturday morning along with his wife who carries ir newly born baby in a baby carrier backpack. y walk straight to weekly market around 4-5 km away from ir residence to get vegetables for week. This has been a routine practice for couple for last few months since March. Every week he visits different weekly markets, all situated around 4-5 km away from his official residence in Tura.

Ram Singh's unique approach

Republic TV decided to get in touch with Ram Singh and bring you a detailed story.

It all started with a meeting at Deputy Commissioner's Office in Tura, chaired by Ram Singh. To curb traffic menace and also pollution in market, Ram Singh suggested that public and officials should try to walk as much as y can and also carry bamboo basket to market inste of relying on plastic bags. "After meeting, I thought, why t I act on it first? n one day I walked to market with bamboo basket and it all started from re," said Ram Singh. "It was in March, ever since, I have been practising it every week," Ram Singh ded.

Deputy Commissioner furr ded that it has inspired many or officials and public as well to walk to market. He said that if everyone practised it, traffic will be at ease and will have less impact on environment. Moreover, use of tritional bamboo basket will help in making district plastic-free.
According to Ram Singh, his regular visits to market on foot has helped him understand problems of district much better apart from keeping a check on issues being faced by public. "It helps me to keep a check on prices of items available in market. If someone is overpricing or is re any loss being faced by farmers, I get to kw all," he said.

'You are being a change yourself'
" best part of walking to market is, it's a workout, you get fresh vegetables, everything is organic, you are being a change yourself," ded Ram Singh.
He is also hopeful that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Fit India initiative, many people will join him in his walk to market.
Till first part of 2018, West Garo Hills was toriously infamous for militancy, but w even though militancy has been wiped out, re is a need to build confidence among public. Deputy of West Garo Hills is particularly hopeful that his movement on foot every weekend with almost extra security cover as he is entitled to, will instil a sense of security among public.
