IIT Bombay pays tribute to its distinguished alumnus Manohar Parrikar, highlights his involvement with another IIT as well

IIT Bombay had conveyed shock at the demise of Goa CM Manohar Parrikar. The former Defence Minister was an alumnus from the renowned institute.

He graduated in metallurgical engineering from the IIT-Bombay.

Here is the institute's statement on the late Goa CM's death:

"Goa Chief Minister Mr. Manohar Parrikar's demise comes as a shock to all of us at IIT Bombay. He was the Institute's Distinguished Alumnus and keenly involved with many initiatives at IIT Bombay. He was also deeply involved with the launch of IIT Goa.

He was the Chief Guest for the 55th Convocation of IIT Bombay held on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at 10.00 am at the Institute’s Convocation Hall. The Institute condoles his demise.

The premier institute of the country will also hold a condolence meeting at its campus to pay tributes to their alumnus.

Parrikar passed away at his private residence on Sunday evening, and his body was kept there during the entire night. “The mortal remains would be brought to BJP office in the morning where they will be kept for one hour before taking them to Kala Academy premises,” BJP Goa spokesman said.

His mortal remains to be taken to Kala Academy from the BJP office for the public to pay their final respects. 

The mortal remains would then be taken for cremation at Miramar beach, next to the memorial of first Goa Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar who was cremated there. 

Parrikar, 63, had passed away on Sunday evening after his year-long fight with pancreatic ailment.

The central government has announced national mourning on Monday, officials earlier said. The national flag will fly at half-mast across the country.

The Goa government announced on Sunday that it would observe seven days of state mourning, from March 18, 2019 to March 24, 2019.

A statement from the government said:

"The Government has expressed profound sorrow on the sad demise of Chief Minister Shri Manohar Parrikar, in the state of Goa on March 17, 2019.  As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days State Mourning will be observed throughout the state of Goa from 18/03/2019 to 24/03/2019 both days inclusive. During the period of State Mourning the National Flag will fly at Half Mast on all the buildings throughout the state of Goa where it is regularly flown and there will be no official entertainment."
