IMA Condemns Brutal Stabbing of On-Duty Government Doctor By Patient's Son in Chennai

New Delhi: Indian Medical Association ( IMA ) on Wednesday condemned recent stabbing of an on-duty government doctor in Chennai, demanding government to implement stronger safety measures for healthcare professionals. In a statement, IMA criticised lack of security for doctors and called for immediate legislation to protect medical staff from violence.

IMA’s letter highlighted urgency of “deterrent legislation, exemplary punishments, and proactive safety measures” to ensure that doctors can work without fear.

Dr. Balaji Jagannath, a medical oncologist and heart patient, sustained injuries to his upper chest, neck, ear, and scalp during attack. 

He was rushed to ICU in critical condition and is currently undergoing emergency surgery, though hospital sources report his condition has stabilised.
