IMD issues preliminary report on Cyclone Nivar, says 'accurately predicted' ahead of time

Cyclone Warning Division of India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a preliminary report on very severe cyclonic storm "NIVAR" over Bay of Bengal from vember 22 to 27. IMD has contended that landfall, intensity and adverse wear like heavy rainfall and strong winds were accurately predicted with sufficient lead time, thus minimising loss of lives associated with system.
A statement from IMD stated that wear forecasting ncy maintained round clock watch over rth Indian Ocean and cyclone was monitored since vember 5, which is about 16 days prior to formation of low-pressure area.

IMD also issued regular advisories apprising nation along with warnings on all social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp etc.
Various numerical wear prediction models run by Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) institutions (IMD, IITM, NCMRWF, INCOIS), global models and dynamical-statistical models were utilized to predict genesis, track, landfall and intensity of cyclone. cyclone was monitored with help of available satellite observations from INSAT 3D and 3DR, SCAT SAT, polar orbiting satellites and available ships & buoy observations in region.

A total of 38 bulletins were issued to national level disaster manrs & chief secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

PM Modi speaks to Tamil Nadu CM
Tamil Nadu was one of states which were most affected and battered by severe cyclonic storm Nivar, which brought along heavy rainfall and strong winds. rrn part of state suffered more dams. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami and pledged to extend support to Cyclone Nivar victims. After discussing situation with Chief Minister, PM Modi anunced ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for next of kin of deceased and Rs 50,000 each to injured. Prime Minister also said, 'Central teams are being sent to Tamil Nadu to assist in rescue and relief work.'

Earlier on Thursday, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami had visited several cyclone-hit areas of Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu and assured relief funds after assessing total dam caused by cyclone. After cyclone slammed into sourn state and Puducherry early on Thursday, it has caused havoc in 18 districts of state, claimed 4 lives, killed cattle, caused a landslide in Puducherry, destroyed several houses and uprooted over 2,000 trees.
