India decries UN envoy's remarks on farmers' protest, cites 'indifference to terrorism'

After the UN Rights envoy criticised India for farm protest, the Indian govt questioned the UN High Commissioner's silence on terror and Red Fort violence.

After UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet in her statement during ongoing session of Human Rights Council on Friday, 26th February, criticised India for slapping charges of sedition against journalists and activists for reporting or commenting on farmers' protest, Indian government questioned UN High Commissioner's silence on terror and Red Fort violence.

India slams UN Rights envoy over talks about farm protests

Permanent Representative of India in Geneva Ambassador Indra Mani Pandey issued a statement, which said, " unprovoked violence on our Republic Day in name of farmers' rights, apparently, left Michelle Bachelet unmoved. UN Rights envoy's indifference to terrorism is of course t new. Objectivity and impartiality have to be hallmarks of any human rights assessment."

India said, "As world's largest democracy, India continues to make every effort in ensuring sustainable development and enjoyment of basic human rights for all its citizens. We have made tremendous progress in realisation of se twins and mutually reinforcing objectives. We hope that council and its institutions will appreciate positive steps we have taken in realisation of se goals."

While stating that government of India has set a goal of doubling income of farmers by 2024, Mani Pandey in letter said that purpose of enacting 3 farm acts is to enable farmers to realise better price for ir products and enhance ir income.

Pointing out furr details about Centre's 3 contentious farm laws, Permanent Representative of India in Geneva said that se laws will particularly benefit small farmers and offer more choices to those farmers who opt for m. Asserting that government has shown outmost respect for protests by farmers, India said that it has remained engd in dialogue with m to address ir concerns.
