India: Here are 10 places severely polluted apart from Delhi on Nov 4

There are 10 other places in India that are severely polluted apart from the national capital having recorded an Air Quality Index of more than 300 on Tuesday.

High levels of pollution have caused tremendous problems for the people in the National Capital Region in the last few days. However, this has become a regular feature in the months of October and November after the culmination of the Diwali festival. An Air Quality Index (AQI) of more than 300 indicates ‘severe pollution’. It is pertinent to note that there are 10 other places in India apart from Delhi who have recorded an AQI of more than 300 on Tuesday.

Most polluted areas of India

Loni, a town in Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh registered 430 AQI to become the nation’s region having the worst air quality. Located 20 km from Ghaziabad city and just outside the outer limit of Delhi, Loni is known as an industrial town. Bihar’s capital Patna sealed the second spot with an AQI of 405. This has been attributed to the bursting of firecrackers on the occasion of Chhath Puja. Muzaffarnagar (399 AQI), Dadri (375 AQI), Noida (375 AQI) and Bawana (368 AQI) occupy the next positions in the list. Prominent cities in Uttar Pradesh such as Lucknow and Ghaziabad also feature among the most polluted places having recorded an AQI of 357 and 331 respectively. While Dasna town located in Ghaziabad district clocked 329 on the AQI, Meerut was the 10th most polluted area in India with 307 AQI.

Governments take steps to tackle air pollution

The Delhi government has embarked on the Odd-Even scheme from November 4 to reduce air pollution, which implies that vehicles with odd and even number plates will ply on alternate days. Women-driven vehicles, cars ferrying school children, taxis, ministers of the Central government have been exempted from the ambit of this scheme. The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister and PM Narendra Modi have also reviewed the situation arising out of the menace of pollution. On the other hand, the Supreme Court too came down heavily on several states for their failure to stop stubble burning, which leads to pollution.
