India, Iran, Uzbekistan discuss enhancing regional connectivity, trade via Chabahar port

Chabahar port, located in energy-rich southeastern Iran, serves as the fulcrum of connectivity between India and Central Asia.

India, Iran and Uzbekistan discussed ways for joint use of strategically located Chabahar port for tre and enhancing regional connectivity at ir first trilateral dialogue on issue on December 14, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement. Chabahar port, located in energy-rich souastern Iran, serves as fulcrum of connectivity between India and Central Asia. Although Pakistan has denied transit asses to India, port can still be reached via  western coast.

"During meeting, participants discussed joint use of Chabahar Port for tre and transit purposes and enhanced regional connectivity. All sides also ted significant role played by Chabahar port for region to deliver humanitarian assistance during COVID pandemic," MEA said in a statement.

'Chabahar Day'

meeting was jointly chaired by Secretary (Shipping) Sanjeev Ranjan, Deputy Minister of Transport of Republic of Uzbekistan, D. Dehkav, and Deputy Transport Minister of Islamic Republic of Iran, Shahram amnej. All three sides ted crucial role played by port in delivery of assistance during COVID-19 pandemic. port is being developed jointly by Iran, Afghanistan, and India.

"All sides welcomed India's proposal to hold 'Chabahar Day' on sidelines of International Maritime Summit scheduled to be hosted by India in January 2021," ministry ded.

meeting comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi dressed Indo-Uzbek virtual summit. According to Ministry of External Affairs, this meeting is first bilateral virtual summit between India and a Central Asian country.

leers discussed entire spectrum of bilateral relationship, including strengning India-Uzbekistan cooperation in post-COVID-19 world. PM Modi and Uzbekistan President Shavkat Mirziyoyev also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
