'Justice for Abhaya': Nationwide Doctors’ Protest Against Murder of Trainee doctor in Bengal

 Civic Volunteer Sanjoy Roy, who was arrested in the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata, was allegedly addicted to pornography and his mobile phone had several such contents, police said on Monday. Roy (33), who had joined the Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer in 2019, was married at least four times and known as a "womaniser", they said.

Junior doctors at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Monday questioned why West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set a seven-day deadline for solving the rape-murder of a postgraduate trainee, asserting they would continue their strike until their demands are met.

The Border Security Force (BSF) in Rajasthan has stepped up its efforts to combat the rising incidents of drone-assisted smuggling of narcotics and arms from across the Indo-Pak border. BSF Inspector General (Rajasthan Frontier) M L Garg said the force is employing advanced anti-drone technology, including detection systems and anti-drone guns, resulting in the successful downing of four drones so far this year.

"Rahul Gandhi is tight-lipped when our daughter, a doctor, is raped in Calcutta. It happens under government protection. Mamata Banerjee should resign while the investigation is going on. If Mamata Banerjee has even a little morality, she should resign. All these incidents keep happening with the support of the government," Union Minister Giriraj Singh said.

"We welcome what West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has said (Handing over the case to CBI if the case is not solved by Sunday) and that's the way to look at certain very serious and heinous crimes. If we can't protect our doctors if we can't bring the guilty to the book in a case as heinous as this, I think as a society we need to question ourselves...Where are we headed if we can't keep our doctors safe," said Pawan Khera. 

Indian Medical Association has written a letter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda over the murder of a Kolkata woman doctor. 

IMA has demanded of the West Bengal State Government the following: 
 

• An impartial thorough investigation of the case and punishment of the culprits. 
• A detailed inquiry into the conditions enabling the crime. 
• Urgent steps to improve the safety of doctors especially women in the workplace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to visit Himachal Pradesh on Monday but the trip was cancelled due to inclement weather, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said.He said the prime minister's visit would be rescheduled once the weather improves.No official announcement was made about Modi's visit earlier.

Sex ratio in India is expected to improve to 952 women per 1000 men by 2036 from 943 in 2011,  according to a report 'Women and Men in India 2023' released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation on Monday. The report highlights that India's population in 2036 is expected to be more feminine compared to the 2011 population, as reflected in the sex ratio which is projected to increase from 943 in 2011 to 952 by 2036, highlighting a positive trend in gender equality.

Resident doctors from several government hospitals here on Monday held protests against the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata and demanded a time-bound probe into the matter. The protests were held at the King George's Medical University (KGMU), Kalyan Singh Super Speciality Cancer Institute (KSSSCI) and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences.

A group of noted personalities led a rally in Kolkata on Monday, demanding action against the rape and murder of a female doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Actor Surangana Bandyopadhyay said, "It is not about just the brutal attack and murder of a woman in a hospital. It involves the safety and security of women everywhere. We demand justice for the victim and her family." 

Actor Kaushik Sen, actor Chaiti Ghosal and social activist-columnist Bolan Gangopadhyay were among the others who participated in the procession.

The Modi government's flagship Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I, which has overshot the expenditure limit, is expected to be completed by 2027-28, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) said in its annual report.

The ministry, in its annual report 2023-24, said a revised financial proposal for the Bharatmala Pariyojana is under process for approval.

The Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-1 entails a total length of 34,800 km in 31 states and UTs and more than 550 districts.

Speaking on the murder of a woman doctor in Kolkata, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, "The law and order situation in Bengal, especially the safety of students, is under question. A similar incident took place in Jadavpur a few days ago. No matter how strongly we condemn the heinous crime that has happened, it will be less. The Bengal government will have to take action against the culprits. The Bengal government will have to be held accountable for it."

“It is a heinous crime. The government should try and deliver justice as soon as possible. The attitude of the police is not right... BJP has been demanding a CBI probe. CM Mamata Banerjee also gave consent for it but she is not writing such a letter to the Home Ministry... The doctors who are agitating are also asking for a CBI probe. This should be done as early as possible because due to delay, there can be a risk of tampering with the evidence,” Majumdar said.

SP leader Nawab Singh Yadav arrested in Kannauj for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl.    Kannauj SP, Amit Kumar Anand says, "Last night around 1.30 am, a call was received on UP 112 wherein a girl said that she had been stripped and an attempt of assault had been made on her. Kannauj Police reached the spot immediately. The girl was rescued and accused Nawab Singh Yadav was arrested in an objectionable condition. During questioning, the girl said that she arrived at the residence of Nawab Singh Yadav along with her paternal aunt. She was told that she had to be there for a job...Case was registered under sections of BNS and POCSO Act. The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway. The girl is a minor and is around 15 years of age...

FORDA (Federation of Resident Doctors Association) writes to Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding nationwide halting of elective services in hospitals in solidarity with R.G. Kar Medical College residents- from today, 12th August.

In their letter, FORDA lists 5 demands -

Expeditious Acceptance of Residents' Demands, Resignation of all the responsible authorities, which include Principal, MSVP, Dean, HOD of pulmonary medicine, ACP of RG Kar MC&H police outpost, who could not perform their duty of protecting the dignity and life of a woman who was in this case an on duty doctor, No Police Brutality, Swift Justice for the Deceased and Security Protocols for Healthcare Workers and formation of Expert committee.

 West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said her government will hand over the RG Kar hospital doctor murder probe to the CBI if police fail to solve the case by Sunday.

Banerjee also said she wants the case to be tried in a fast track court.

“If the police are unable to solve this by Sunday, we will hand over the case to the CBI. However, the success rate of the central probe agency is very low,” Banerjee told reporters here after visiting the residence of the deceased doctor.

What is happening in Bengal is the horrifying truth of government terror. We demand a CBI inquiry, which the BJP there has asked for. Mamta ji, you repeatedly run away from the CBI, at least give justice to the brutal murder of a dead doctor..."

On RG Kar Medical College and Hospital incident, DCP North, Abhishek Gupta says, "The names of the people entering the hospital will now be noted down in a register. No unwanted person should enter to create problems. Doctors have demanded to increase the security around the hospital. The guards have been given identity cards which they will always wear on duty. This is just a step to increase security..."

Manoj, an eyewitness to the stampede at Baba Siddhnath Temple in Bihar's Jehanabad, says, "...Had the Administration worked well, the flower seller would not have picked a fight. There was a brawl. It happened right before us. So many of us were trapped there, someone pulled me out of there. Had I been stuck there for a minute or two more, I would have died. The incident happened due to a stampede. The Police were nowhere to be seen at the spot, they were deployed along the route...I have suffered injuries too..."

 Death toll rises to 8 in Makhdumpur Stampede in Bihar

Days after a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata was found murdered, her initial autopsy reports are out.

According to the autopsy reports, the victim was sexually assaulted before being killed; her body parts were bleeding and her neck was also broken.

Sensational revelations have been made by the Kolkata police investigating the trainee doctor’s murder case stating that a preliminary probe into the rape and murder of the doctor in a state-run hospital in Kolkata disclosed that the accused was addicted to watching violent porn content while drinking at night. On the fateful night, the accused, identified as Sanjay Roy, allegedly watched pornographic content while drinking before allegedly raping and killing the doctor.

According to police sources, at around 11 pm on the day of the murder, Sanjay Roy watched porn while drinking liquor in the backside of the hospital at night. The police also revealed that during the analysis of the mobile phone of the accused, several violent pornographic videos were found.
