'Act decisively,' TN CM to Centre over arrest of fishermen by Sri Lanka

Chief Minister M K Stalin on Saturday wrote to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar over the arrest of 35 Tamil Nadu fishermen by Sri Lanka and sought decisive action to secure their release.

Thirty-five fishermen from Ramanathapuram district were arrested on August 9 by Sri Lankan Navy and their four motorised country boats were also seized, Stalin said in a letter to Jaishankar, conveying deep anguish and concern.

"I wish to recall that just recently a delegation from Tamil Nadu that included the MPs and fishermen representatives met you after we had lost two fishermen. It is distressing to note that despite this, there has been no significant relief or respite in this regard." It is imperative that stronger diplomatic measures be pursued to ensure the immediate release of Tamil Nadu fishermen and to establish a more permanent solution to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Delhi court acquits man of dowry death, cruelty charges

More than 12 years after a man was booked for the alleged dowry death of his wife, a court here has acquitted him, saying the prosecution has failed to provide cogent or convincing evidence to prove his guilt.

Additional Sessions Judge Sharad Gupta was hearing a case against Satender Gautam, who was accused of harassing and beating up his wife Poonam for dowry, because of which she committed suicide by consuming poison in November 2011.

Taking note of the evidence before it, including the testimonies of the deceased's parents, the court said the prosecution was unable to prove that the woman was subjected to cruelty or harassed for dowry.

Finance Secretary T V Somanathan named new Cabinet Secretary

Finance Secretary T V Somanathan was on Saturday named as the new Cabinet Secretary by the government for a tenure of two years.

He will succeed incumbent Rajiv Gauba, who completes his unprecedented five-year term in the top bureaucratic post this month-end.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved Somanathan's appointment as the Cabinet Secretary with a tenure of two years from August 30, an order issued by the Personnel Ministry said.

The ACC-led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also approved his appointment as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Cabinet Secretariat "from the date he joins the assignment till he takes over as Cabinet Secretary", it said.

Mumbai builder forges documents to claim 71 flats in project

 A builder-developer was booked by Mumbai Police for allegedly using forged documents to stake claim to 71 flats/offices in a project in Bhandup and cheating his partners of Rs 13.65 crore, a police official said on Saturday.

An FIR was registered against the builder, Pratik Vira, after another real estate developer Kashyap Mehta lodged a complaint at Azad Maidan police station.

The investigations showed Vira allegedly fraudulently pocketed gains through the corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) at Samriddhi Garden Project undertaken by Sivana Realty.

Two soldiers killed, four others injured in encounter with terrorists

Two Army personnel died while four others were injured during a fierce gunfight with terrorists in a forest in Anantnag district of South Kashmir on Saturday, officials said.

The conflict occurred during a cordon and search operation that was initiated by the security forces based on intelligence reports indicating the presence of terrorists in the remote Ahlan Gagarmandu forest.

Two civilians were also injured in the crossfire, officials said.

According to them, the skirmish began when a group of terrorists opened fire at the joint search parties comprising Army troopers, including para commandos, and local police.

Help needy without delay, UP CM Adityanath tells officials

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during 'Janta Darshan' at the Gorakhnath temple here met several people and listened to their grievances, directing officials for their prompt resolution.

The CM emphasised that there should be no delay in assisting those in need and ensuring that eligible individuals benefit from the government's welfare schemes. He warned officials that any negligence in this regard would not be tolerated.

"If any issues arise at any level, they should be identified and resolved. If a case is deliberately kept pending, accountability should be established, and an appropriate action should be taken against those responsible," he said.

The CM heard the grievances of around 400 people and gave necessary instructions to officials for their resolution. When some individuals complained about land encroachment, the chief minister directed officials to take strict action against the land mafia and those involved in such illegal activities, according to a statement.

Woman doctor murder case: Court sends accused to 14-day police custody

A city court on Saturday ordered a 14-day police remand for the accused arrested in connection with the alleged rape and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor.

The accused, charged under sections 64 (rape) and 103 (murder) of the BNS, was presented before the Sealdah court after his arrest earlier in the day.

The judge granted the prosecution's request for a 14-day police remand till August 23 for further questioning in connection with the crime.

The woman's body was discovered inside the seminar hall of the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on Friday.

PM Modi visits disaster-hit Chooralmala in Wayanad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the landslide-devastated areas of Wayanad district in Kerala on Saturday and trekked through the disaster-stricken Chooralmala to get a firsthand view of the destruction caused by the July 30 landslides.

Modi also visited one of the relief camps, which is home to many of those displaced in the massive landslides, and interacted with some of the survivors, including two children who lost their loved ones in the disaster that has claimed over 200 lives.

Modi arrived in the hill district by helicopter from Kannur airport.

Heavy rains lash parts of Himachal, over 120 roads closed

Heavy rains lashed parts of Himachal Pradesh as 128 roads remained closed in the state due to landslides and flash floods. The regional Met office has also issued an 'orange' warning for heavy to very rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, at isolated places on Saturday and a 'yellow' warning for heavy rain till August 16. Heavy rains lashed parts of the state with Nahan (Sirmaur) recording the highest rainfall of 168.3 mm since Friday evening, followed by 106.4 mm in Sandhole, 93.2 mm in Nagrota Suriyan, 67 mm in Dhaulakuan, 53.2 mm in Jubberhatti and 45.6 mm in Kandaghat.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday handed over the appointment letter to the wife of a bus driver who was among nine persons killed in a terror attack on a bus carrying pilgrims in Reasi. Renu Sharma, the wife of bus driver Vijay Kumar of Reasi, was given a government job on compassionate grounds by Sinha at a function in Raj Bhawan here, a spokesperson said.

CRPF jawan dies after being hit by goods train in UP's Etawah

A 35-year-old CRPF jawan was killed after being hit by a goods train, a police official said on Saturday. The incident happened around 7 pm on Friday, when Jabar Singh of ali Khurd village was returning home from his farm, Barthana Station House Officer Devendra Singh said. According to police, Singh worked in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and had come home on leave.

Man killed after speeding SUV dashes motorcycle in Palghar

A 29-year-old man was killed after a speeding SUV dashed his motorcycle in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Saturday. An official said the district rural police arrested the SUV driver, Sachin Suravase, following the accident at Manor on Friday afternoon. The accident occurred around 2.30 pm when the victim, Sagar Patil, was riding his motorcycle, and a speeding SUV dashed the vehicle, causing him to fall, he said.

1 arrested in connection with murder of woman PGT doctor at Kolkata hospital

Police arrested one person for his alleged involvement in the murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a senior officer said on Saturday. The man was an outsider who had free access to the different departments of the hospital, he said. "We have arrested one person, who is an outsider. His activities are quite suspicious and he seems to be directly involved in the crime," the police officer told PTI.

The Bihar Police have arrested three persons from Gopalganj district and recovered 50 gm of a "radioactive substance" worth crores from their possession, officials said. The Gopalganj Police have also intimated officials of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), they said on Friday. "Acting on a tip-off, police nabbed all the three from Balthari area under the jurisdiction of Kuchaikot Police station on Thursday. During interrogation, 50 gm of expensive radioactive substance ‘Californium’ and four mobile phones were recovered.

Blood samples of not only the 17-year-old minor involved in the Kalyani Nagar Porsche crash but those of the two friends accompanying him were also replaced at the government-run Sassoon hospital here so as to establish that they were not drunk, the prosecution said on Thursday. The sessions court is hearing the bail applications of six accused in the case, namely, the minor's parents Vishal Agarwal and Shivani Agarwal; Sassoon hospital's Dr Ajay Taware and Dr Shreehari Halnor, and alleged middlemen Ashpak Makandar and Amar Gaikwad.

West Bengal: Second-year medical student found dead, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul demands CBI probe

West Bengal BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul demanded a CBI investigation and a re-postmortem by a Central Government hospital after a second-year medical student was found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. Agnimitra Paul said, "The condition in which her body was found, completely naked with bruises all over it, makes it look like she was raped and then murdered. We demand a CBI investigation. You can't conduct a postmortem after the evening, but they did it here. If postmortem is done under the state system, truth will be buried."

Delhi court awards 15 years jail to priest for sexually assaulting boy

Delhi's Tis Hazari court has awarded 15-year jail term to a priest for sexually assaulting a minor boy eight years ago. The court called the offence a crime against society at large. An FIR was registered at the Punjabi Bagh police station in 2016 in regard to the crime.
