National Disaster Risk Reduction And Management Authority (NDRRMA), Nepal said that at least 14 people have been killed in landslide, flooding and lightning incidents in various parts of Nepal within the last 24 hours with the onset of monsoon.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday spread its dragnet further in search of designated terrorist Goldy Brar and one other gangster, wanted in a case of alleged extortion and firing at the house of a businessman in Chandigarh, with the declaration of a cash reward for their arrest. The agency has announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh each for any information leading to the apprehension/ arrest of either of the two men. The agency further stated that the identity of the informant would be kept a secret.

Pune court has reserved the order in the Porsche accident case. Defence lawyer had applied for the bail of the father and grandfather of the accused juvenile.

 Three persons were arrested and around 120 gm of brown sugar seized from their possession in Jharkhand’s Garhwa district on Wednesday, police said.

Based on a tip-off, a team of security forces intercepted a vehicle and recovered the consignment, they said.

“Three persons were arrested in connection with the recovery,” Garhwa SP Deepak Kumar Pandey said.

Further investigation is underway, he said.

A 77-year-old man, who was stung by bees while climbing a tree, succumbed in a hospital in this district, police said.

According to police, Gurusamy, a tree climber of Punjai Thuraiya Palayam village within Bangla Pudur police limits, while climbing a coconut tree two days ago was attacked by a swarm of bees and admitted to a hospital for treatment. He, however, died in the hospital on Tuesday evening.

Bangalapudur police registered a case and are investigating. 

The preparation for adopting the system of the three new criminal laws is in full swing in Himachal Pradesh, with the related training of officials to be completed soon, a top police officer said on Wednesday.

The new laws embody a reformative philosophy, not retributive philosophy and will make the system transparent, strong and effective, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Abhishek Trivedi said in a statement issued here.

"All cases registered since midnight of July 1 will be tried as per the new criminal laws," he said during an interaction with officials.

The three laws -- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam -- which are replacing the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Code of Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act, respectively, will be effective from July 1, according to the Centre.

Some of the Ministers have been pitching for Deputy CM posts to be given to leaders from Veerashaiva-Lingayat, SC/ST and minority communities. Currently, D K Shivakumar from the Vokkaliga community is only the Deputy Chief Minister in the Siddaramaiah cabinet. "Whatever the high command decides is final," Siddaramaiah told reporters in response to a question.

Houses were damaged, trees uprooted, and water levels rose steadily in rivers and dams across Kerala after heavy rains accompanied by strong winds continued to lash several parts of the state on Wednesday. High tides and sea incursions were reported in districts like Thrissur and Ernakulam, and landslides wrecked havoc in the high ranges of Kozhikode. Several houses have were damaged in Alappuzha, Kannur and Idukki districts following heavy downpour and winds since on Tuesday night, authorities said.

Union Minister Chirag Paswan said Wednesday the decisions taken by Kota MP Om Birla as the speaker of the last Lok Sabha have strengthened democracy. NDA nominee Birla was elected as the speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Wednesday after a motion moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was adopted through voice votes. This will be Birla's second consecutive term in the post.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday passed a unanimous resolution urging the Centre to take up caste-based census soon. The resolution piloted by Chief Minister M K Stalin said the central government should immediately commence the census work, which is due from 2021, along with caste-based population census this time.

Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay and DMK leader T R Baalu on Wednesday congratulated Om Birla for being elected speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term and hoped he would be impartial towards the opposition. Bandyopadhyay said the functioning of the House always depends on the attitude of the treasury benches and the House belongs to the opposition. Security forces were put on high alert after a villager claimed to have spotted two suspicious armed men in Punjab's Pathankot, officials said on Wednesday. The Punjab Police, along with the Army and the Border Security Force (BSF), launched a massive search operation in Pathankot, a senior Punjab Police officer said.

An encounter broke out on Wednesday between terrorists and security forces in a forest area in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, police officials said.

The gunfight started in Bajaad village in Gandoh area around 9.50 am amid intensified search and cordon operation by the police along with the Army and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) following twin terrorist attacks in the hilly district on June 11 and 12, the officials said. (PTI)

An aircraft carrying WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has left Saipan after he pleaded guilty Wednesday to obtaining and publishing US military secrets. The plea in the US Pacific commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands concluded a drawn-out legal saga that spanned continents.

The agreement with the US.Justice Department required Assange to admit guilt to a single felony count but permitted him to return to his home country of Australia without any time in an American prison.

Preparations are underway ahead of the Rath Yatra in Odisha's Puri. Visuals from the city shows that the chairots are in the making. Though three gigantic chariots are constructed every year afresh for the annual rath yatra, they are made by traditional carpenters with no formal training.
