India welcomes extension of New START Treaty between US & Russia: MEA

India hopes the extension of the treaty between the US and Russia will promote dialogue and cooperation to help address international non-proliferation issues

On Thursday, Ministry of External Affairs welcomed extension of New START Treaty between United States and Russia. MEA, in a press release, said that India hopes extension of nuclear arms treaty between Washington and Moscow will promote dialogue and cooperation to help dress international n-proliferation and disarmament issues. sole nuclear arms limitation treaty between United States and Russia has been renewed by five more years.

United States on Wednesday anunced that it is formally extending New START Treaty until at least February 5, 2026. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that extension of treaty will make United States and world "safer". Earlier, Russian President Vlimir Putin h signed a federal law to allow extension of treaty.

A day before signing extension order, Putin held a telephonic conversation with his US counterpart Joe Biden, where both leers agreed to extend treaty. two leers discussed how important it is to remain on agreement in order to ensure safety and security of ir people and rest of world. New START Treaty was set to expire on February 5, 2020. treaty requires both United States and Russia to limit ir arsenal of deployed nuclear weapons.

New START Treaty

New START Treaty, which is officially kwn as Measures for Furr Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms, was initially signed between Russia and United States in April 2010 in Prague. treaty establishes limitations of strategic nuclear missile launchers and has provisions concerning "inspection, conversion, and elimination of strategic offensive weapons". Under treaty, both sides are required to limit ir number of deployed nuclear warhes to 1,550, deployed ICBMs and bombers to 700, and deployed and n-deployed ICBM launchers and bombers to 800.
