Indian climbers topped list of Mount Everest aspirants this spring as 78 Indian nationals were granted permission to climb 8,848-meter peak from Nepalese side, Mira Acharya, Director Department of Tourism, told PTI.

Americans came second with a total of 75 climbers getting permission, Acharya said.

In past, Europeans outnumbered foreign climbers and very few Indians climbed mountains, she said.
Around 600 people, including international and Nepalese climbers, Sherpa mountain guides and porters have reached summit this season.

Nepal opened climbing route to world's highest peak on May 14, when a team of eight Sherpas successfully scaled Mount Everest, becoming first team to reach summit.
