Indian Diplomats In Canada Put Under Surveillance, Not Acceptable: MEA

Indian diplomats are being put under surveillance, which is totally unacceptable. We had also taken up the matter very strongly with Canada, MEA said.

New Delhi: Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has strongly condemned surveillance of Indian diplomats in Cana, calling it “totally unacceptable.”

While dressing briefing on Thursday, Jaiswal highlighted increased threats against Indian diplomats in Cana, citing instances of harassment, intimidation, and surveillance.

"Indian diplomats are being put under surveillance, which is totally unacceptable. EAM also has spoken about it. We h also taken up matter very strongly with Canian side on it," said Jaiswal.

"Over last year or even more, kind of things that we have seen attacking Indian diplomats, threatening, intimidating, harassing Indian diplomats... Yes, threats have increased," he ded.

Furr MEA spokesperson said India has asked for security for ir diplomats for consular camp which has t been provided by Canian side.

"We h asked for security to be provided for our diplomats where consular camp was to be held and those have t been provided by Canian side," he said.

This development follows tensions between India and Cana regarding alleged involvement of Indian nts in killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canian citizen.

In recent years, Cana has witnessed a surge in Khalistani extremist activities, including violent protests and attacks on Hindu temples.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, who is in Australia, on Tuesday expressed concerns about attack on Hindu temple in Cana and said incident shows how "political " is being given to "extremist forces" in country.

"What happened yesterday at Hindu temple in Cana was deeply concerning. You should have seen statement by our official spokesperson and also expression of concern by our PM yesterday. That should convey to you how deeply we feel about it," Jaishankar said at a joint press conference with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong.
