Indian Naval Ships arrive in Papua New Guinea to strengthen maritime cooperation

According to the Indian Navy, the nation's engagement with Papua New Guinea signifies its commitment to being a responsible maritime power.

INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata have arrived at Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), as part of their mission deployment in the Eastern Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The visit aims to enhance maritime partnership and cooperation between India and PNG, fostering closer ties in the maritime domain.  

During the port call, the crew members of INS Sahyadri and INS Kolkata will participate in a diverse array of activities with personnel from the PNG Defence Forces. These activities include professional interactions, cultural exchanges, yoga sessions, and ship visits, with the objective of strengthening the bond of friendship and cooperation between the two nations.

Cutting-edge warships at the forefront

INS Sahyadri, commanded by Capt Rajan Kapoor, represents the third ship of the indigenously designed and built Project-17 class multirole stealth frigates. On the other hand, INS Kolkata, under the command of Capt Sharad Sinsunwal, stands as the first ship of the indigenously designed and built Project-15A class destroyers. Both these technologically advanced warships, constructed at Mazagon Dock Ltd, Mumbai, are equipped with a formidable arsenal of modern weapons and sensors capable of addressing threats in all three dimensions.

The visit by Indian Navy ships to Papua New Guinea serves as a testament to India's unwavering commitment to fostering friendly and cooperative relations with nations in the Indian Ocean Region.
