Indira Gandhi: PM Modi & Amit Shah pay homage on her death anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday paid homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary. Taking to Twitter, PM Modi tweeted: "A humble tribute to the former Prime Minister of the country, Indira Gandhi on her death anniversary."

Amit Shah also paid tribute to the former Prime Minister while flagging off 'RunForUnity' marathon at Rashtriya Ekta Diwas at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. "Today, we pay tributes to former PM Indira Gandhi," he said. 

About Indira Gandhi

Indira Gandhi was born on November 19, 1917, to the man who would go on to become India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and his wife Kamala Nehru. She completed her initial education from Visva-Bharati University, Shantiniketan, West Bengal and later moved to Somerville College, Oxford. During Nehru's tenure as the PM from 1947 to 1964, Indira Gandhi was among her father's closest aides and also grew as a politician in her own right, going on to head the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Indira Gandhi assumed the role of Prime Minister of India in 1966 after Morarji Desai's demise. She remained Prime Minister for 11 years after first coming to the office -- a period that ended with the Emergency being declared in India for the first and only time. After being briefly toppled, she again returned as Prime Minister in 1980 and held the post till her assassination in 1984. Indira Gandhi gave her last speech on October 30, 1984, in Odisha, a day before her assassination.
