Amid Covid lockdown, IRCTC fires up its kitchens to fill over 50,000 hungry stomachs a day

IRCTC has started preparing food for people across all its 28 locations in the country. Till now it has provided meals to over 4 lakh people across the country.

 Indian Rail Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has reportedly ramped up food production across its kitchens nationwide in order to provide meals to at least 4 lakh underprivileged people since anuncement of 21-days lockdown. As per media reports, railway catering and tourism corporation has started preparing food for people across all 28 locations including IRCTC base kitchens. 

According to reports,  railway kitchens provided over 51,000 meals on April 14, while authorities ensured that  IRCTC's base kitchen at New Delhi railway station was also cooking extra meals to cater to population. Speaking to a news ncy, IRCTC spokesperson Sidhhartha Singh said that every day, kitchen at Delhi cooks food for over 8,000 people which is n provided to Railway Protection Force and state government to distribute among underprivileged ones. He furr said that to avoid wast, meals are prepared in accordance with demands. As of w, Sidhhartha said, demand was estimated to be for 8,200 meals. However, as demand increases, authorities will increase production of food so that everybody is fed during se challenging times, he ded.

Sidhhartha furr ded saying that IRCTC cooks food twice a day, and kitchen opens at 6 am sharp every day. He said that routine ensured that lunch is served by 11 am, and preparation for dinner starts by 1 pm. Preparation for dinner commences only after kitchen is thoroughly cleaned, and food is usually rey by 6 pm, he ded. Reportedly, food is n collected from IRCTC kitchen for delivery by Railway Protection Force (RPF), Delhi government officials and Delhi Police.

Through sanitisation inspections in IRCTC kitchens

Sunil Kumar, supervisor at IRCTC base kitchen in New Delhi was quoted as saying that 125 staff members who worked at kitchen have to here to health safety protocols. y have to pass rmal screening before entering campus and h n sanitise ir hands. staff has been instructed to wear masks, gloves, and he protective gear. At IRCTC kitchen, Sunil ded, proper cleanliness is ensured. utensils are thoroughly cleaned before preparation of food. To prepare rice, IRCTC has installed an automatic machine that cooks rice in 40 minutes.

Speaking about menu, Sunil told news ncy that veg pulao, poha, and khichdi are served on a rotational basis, keeping in mind its nutritional value. kitchen also serves pickle along with meals, he ded. IRCTC base kitchen is capable of preparing food for over 10,000 to 15,000 people on a daily basis, however, at this time, staff prepares meals for over 8,000. New Delhi kitchen has over 18 staff members working during lockdown, IRCTC spokesperson Sidhhartha ded.
