JU cancels special convocation to be addressed by guv amid black flag threat by students
Jadavpur University decided not to hold the scheduled Special Convocation programme to be addressed by WB guv amid threat of students to show him black flag.

Javpur University on Saturday decided t to hold scheduled Special Convocation programme to be dressed by Chancellor who is also state's goverr, in view of threat of students' bodies to show black flag to him, an official said. university's annual convocation which does t require Chancellor's presence, however, will be held on same date - December 24, JU Registrar Snehamanju Basu told PTI. Horary doctorate degrees are conferred to eminent personalities in special convocations in all universities and it is followed by annual convocation. decision t to hold Special Convocation has been taken at an Executive Committee meeting in wake of threat of Left students' bodies to show black flag to Chancellor and Goverr Jagdeep Dhankhar if he presides over function, Basu said.

"We wanted to avoid any situation during an occasion where luminaries would have been conferred horary doctorates in various disciplines," registrar said.

Arts Faculty Students Union General Secretary and SFI leer Debraj Debnath said left union has submitted a letter to university authorities saying " students' aired reservation to be part of any event in university which will be attended by goverr due to his statements and stance on issues like NRC, CAA and his role in calling police to campus on September 19."

"We would show him black flag and raise slogans if he steps into campus on December 24. students are furious over his utterances (on NRC and CAA) and want to register ir protests," Debnath said.
A senior professor of Javpur University Teachers' Association said, " Special Convocation h to be cancelled in view of sentiments of a section of students, who are stakeholders of institute." He said those scheduled to be conferred horary doctorates - former foreign secretary Salman Haidar. Apart from this, it also hours veteran Bengali poet Sankha Ghosh, Eminent scientist Prof C N R Rao, and Director of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) Sanghamitra Bandyophyay - have been intimated about JU's decision about postponement of convocation.

Dhankhar h reportedly expressed his reservations about two of four names at Court meeting in October. He later agreed when an overwhelming majority of Court members refused to change names, source said. Dhankhar h asked JU vice-chancellor to call police when Union minister Babul Supriyo h been manhandled by students at JU campus. Ar JU source said two of four personalities h informally told authorities about ir inability to accept horary doctorate at Special Convocation "for certain reasons."
