The Indian Army rescued more than 2,500 tourists who were stranded near East Sikkim's 17th Mile area, close to the India-China border, due to heavy snowfall on December 29. The tourists were returning from Nathu La pass and Tsomgo (Changu) Lake on December 28 evening when snowfall in the region blocked roads, leaving over 300 to 400 civil vehicles stranded at various points on Jawahar Lal Nehru Road.
The jawans of the Indian Army launched the biggest rescue operation and saved the stranded tourists. They were later brought to a camp in 17th Mile area and served food and medicines. Among the tourists, including elderly people and children, more than 90 people fell ill and were taken to safety in ambulances.
