Jairam Ramesh condemns military coup in Myanmar; recalls day spent with Aung San Suu Kyi

Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, Myanmar President Win Myint and or officials of ruling National League for Democracy were detained in early morning raids after which military declared that it h taken control of country for one year under a state of emergency. utimate authority has been transferred to Myanmar's Army Chief Min Aung Hlaing.
On this occasion, Ramesh recalled memories of his interaction with Suu Kyi during her India visit in vember 2012. India, US expresses concern
Expressing strong reservation over Myanmar coup, Ministry of External Affairs stated, "We have ted developments in Myanmar with deep concern. India has always been stefast in its support to process of democratic transition in Myanmar. We believe that rule of law and democratic process must be upheld. We are monitoring situation closely". In ar stern statement, White House spokesperson Jen Psaki affirmed strong support of US for Myanmar's democratic institutions.

Calling upon military to release detained civilian leers including Suu Kyi, she ted, " United States opposes any attempt to alter outcome of recent elections or impede Myanmar's democratic transition, and will take action against those responsible if se steps are t reversed". Meanwhile, UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned detention of Myanmar's civilian leers on eve of country's Parliament session and described military action as a "serious blow" to democratic reforms.
