Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections to happen soon: Governor GC Murmu

Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir GC Murmu announced that Assembly elections will be held soon in the state.

Lieutenant Goverr of Jammu and Kashmir GC Murmu anunced that elections will be held soon in state. newly elected Goverr of state said that w that state is under Centre's rule and is a legislature, elections should be held as soon as possible. 

"Election will be happening soon in Jammu and Kashmir. This state is w under central government and also it is a legislature. And thus elections should take place as soon as possible and your help is needed," Goverr of Jammu and Kashmir said.

state has been under Goverr's rule since June 2018, since coalition government of BJP and Mehbooba Mufti led-PDP felt apart. Furrmore, Union Cabinet Wednesday approved an extension of President's rule in Jammu and Kashmir for six more months beginning July 3, Union minister Prakash Javedkar said. A meeting of Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, decided that central rule, which has been continuing in Jammu and Kashmir since June 20, 2018, will remain for six months.

J&K Assembly Constituencies

proposed Delimitation Commission to redraw assembly constituencies in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir will be set up by central government, and t Election Commission, poll panel said on vember 1.  Responding to a question at a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora said that under Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, Delimitation Commission is to set up by Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Arora said MHA and Law Ministry can decide among mselves who would issue tification for delimitation exercise. "Depending on who hes Delimitation Commission, an appropriate representative of appropriate seniority will be given by Election Commission," Arora said.

re have been suggestions that EC would constitute delimitation commission. Two retired EC officials -- Shingara Ram and R K Srivastava -- have been engd to help in delimitation process. Both have contributed in past delimitation exercise.

"When y (government) are rey, we are rey," Arora said.

According to section 60 of Reorganisation Act, "... number of seats in Legislative Assembly of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall be increased from 107 to 114...." Out of se 24 seats are in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. "So effectively, seats will go up from 83 to 90," Arora explained. Delimitation is process of fixing limits or boundaries of territorial constituencies in a country or a province with a legislative body.
