Jammu and Kashmir: Rain, snow likely in higher reaches over 2 days

Jammu and Kashmir is expected to be impacted by a western disturbance on Saturday, with the possibility of two days of light rain or snow in the higher regions.

Although cloud cover helped the cold wave conditions in north and central Kashmir, the temperature in south Kashmir areas dropped last night. 

The summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar, saw a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius on Friday night, which was colder than the minus 3.5 degrees Celsius the night before.

The renowned ski resort of Gulmarg in the Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 2.8 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam, in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir, which serves as one of the base camps for the yearly Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 5.1 degrees Celsius.

A low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius was recorded in Qazigund, minus 3.6 degrees in Kokernag town, and minus 1.0 degrees in Kupwara.

A weak western disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir between Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, the officials said.

They stated that light rain or snow is predicted in some areas due to its influence, particularly in the upper reaches.

According to the officials, there will also likely be some light snowfall in Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Gurez Valley, and Mughal Road.

According to the meteorological department, the weak western disturbance will cause the minimum temperature to rise until Sunday, at which point it is expected to drop by one to three degrees at night once again.
